Atascadero loosely translates to “bog” or more specifically “a place of much water” in the Chumash language. The area was first home to the native Salinas tribe. Between 1769 and 1823 the area was in the hands of the Spanish Franciscans who built missions throughout the region. When Mexico won independence from Spain the lands came under their control. Later it came into the hands of the U.S. It was not until 1913 that the city was founded by E. G. Lewis. Lewis had a vision of a Utopian community. In 1914, the land was surveyed, divided and the work soon began on the model community. Little remains today of the model community that once was the “progress.” It was not until July of 1979 that the city was incorporated. Today this bustling community is part of the Atascadero Unified School District which features more than a dozen schools and programs, including Monterey Road Elementary, Atascadero Fine Arts Academy, Atascadero Junior High, Del Rio Continuation and others.
