The city of Arroyo Grande spans 5.835 square miles of land area and is located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The city is midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco and has a temperate Mediterranean climate. It is a medium-sized coastal city made up of five neighborhoods; Edina, Callander/Los Berros, Huasana Road/Branch Mill Road, Oaks, and City Center. The city is home to a variety of galleries and theaters that add culture and color to the community. It is also home to the Arroyo Grande Village Area which features historic buildings, specialty shops, and fine dining options. It is in the middle of California’s wine country and there are numerous wineries in and around this beautiful city. Many notable residents have called Arroyo Grande home, like actor Zac Efron, breeder of Arabian horses Sheila Varian, and bodybuilder and actor, Lou Ferrigno.
 
The earliest known inhabitants of the area were people of the Chumash tribes. The first Europeans to visit were Portuguese explorers, working for Spain, led by Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo. The next group was the Portola expedition in 1769. Spain controlled the area throughout the mission era, but when Mexico won its independence from Spain it gained control of the area. The U.S. gained control of the area in 1848 and statehood soon followed. For many years cattle ranches were the main industry and the base of the local economy. The township of Arroyo Grande was established in 1862 and in 1882 a railroad depot was built the town flourished and over time grew into the city we see today. The city has a mixed workforce of both white and blue-collar workers and households are primarily of upper-middle-class income. 
 
Educational needs for the city are primarily provided by the Lucia Mar Unified School District. Local schools include Arroyo Grande High School, Branch Elementary, Harloe Elementary, and others. The area is blessed with beaches, golf courses, country roads, and a variety of locations perfect for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and more.
