The community is located in what was once Rancho Paso de Robles Mexican land grant. It was founded in 1886 when Chauncey Hatch Phillips, of the West Coast Land Company, sent R.R. Harris to survey 160 acres that had been set aside for the development of a town south of Paso Robles. The land was laid out in business lots and residential lots of 5-12 acres each. The town was named after the young son of Charles F. Crocker, the vice president of the Southern Pacific Railroad. A large fire, in 1898, destroyed much of the original buildings in downtown Templeton, but they were soon rebuilt in brick. For a time the town was the last stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad, but when the line was continued further south Templeton became only a flag stop. Today there are not stops in Templeton, as it has become a bypass town.

Templeton's schools are well known for being some of the highest ranked in the state of California. District schools include Templeton High School, Vineyard Elementary and Templeton Middle School. The community features a Farmers Market that sells locally grown produce on Saturday mornings at the Community Park. Happy Acres Farm, a local attraction, offers tours and sells cheese made from goats milk from their own herd. Farmstand 46 is a local eatery with fields of fresh produce and serves wood fired pizzas and artisanal sandwiches. Homes for sale are middle class and higher in nature.
