Welcome to Avila Beach

Avila Beach or “Avila” as the locals refer to it, is located in San Luis County, California. Avila rests between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the San Luis Bay. It is primarily a rural coastal neighborhood, as such, it is obviously nautical in nature with beautiful ocean views and a variety of beach/water activities. Tourism is the main industry and the area is highly walkable. The community also has a working commercial fishing pier and further inland you’ll find extensive Apple orchards. Located along a remote portion of the beach sits the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, the only remaining nuclear power plant in the state.

Avila Beach's history is full of interesting bits of trivia. The community is named after Miguel Avila, who was granted Rancho Santa Miguelito in 1842. Avila Beach was once the main shipping port of San Luis Obispo. The community was established in the latter half of the 1800s. The historic San Luis Lighthouse/Station was built in 1890. It is the only surviving Prairie Victorian model lighthouse on the West Coast. It was the primary film location for the 1979 film “California Dreaming.”

Avila Beach has three piers, Avila Beach Pier is open to the public, Hartford Pier for commercial fishing boats, and California Polytechnic State University Pier, which is part of the university marine research program. Whale watching along the Avila Beach Pier draws locals and tourists alike. It is a peaceful neighborhood and as a tourist destination, it is especially quiet during the off-season. Over 8% of the homes are seasonally occupied. Homes for sale are primarily medium-sized three and four-bedroom single-family homes that were built between 1970 and 1999.
