Welcome to Cayucos

Cayucos is a small coastal town located between Morro Bay and Cambria. It spans 3.477 square miles, 3.100 square miles of land area and .377 square miles of water area. It is nautical in nature with breathtaking waterfront scenery and a variety of waterfront activities like beach-combing, swimming, sand castle building and so much more. The area is blessed with sunny summers and mild winters that encourage residents to embrace a healthy outdoor lifestyle. Arthur Frommes Budget Travel Magazine named the community as one of the “Coolest Small Towns in America” in 2009.

The first known inhabitants were the Chumash and the first European explorers to the area were the Portola Expedition in 1769. The community is named for the Chumash word for kayak or canoe, which they used to catch fish and harvest kelp in the bay. The town was founded in 1867 by Captain James Cass. Cass began to develop the area with the aid of his business partner Captain Ingalls. Cass built a 90-foot pier and a warehouse to store cargo. These additions to the fledgling community helped establish the shipping industry in the area. When Cass returned to the sea in 1875, development efforts were then spearheaded by developer C.H. Phillips. Phillips subdivided the remaining lands and sold off lots. The area continued to grow and develop over the years until it became the community that thrives there today.

Cayucos is a major vacation destination and as such much of the population is seasonal. Year-round residents enjoy a much quieter community in the off-season. The community features Cass Wharf and Estero Bay, the wharf is a public pier perfect for rock fishing and the bay has quiet waters perfect for diving, swimming, surf fishing, and more. The community is warm and lively with a lot of community Pride. The community hosts annual events like a Masquerade Ball, Car Show, Sea Glass Festival, Christmas in Cayucos and so much more.
