Welcome to Los Osos

The unincorporated community of Los Osos is located in San Luis Obispo County, California, and spans 12.78 square miles, 12.763 square miles of land area, and .20 square miles of water area. The community is primarily residential and serves as a bedroom community to San Luis Obispo. However, despite its residential nature does have a small business district. Los Osos contains large groves of eucalyptus trees which draw swarms of Monarch butterflies every year. This semi-small coastal community is made up of three neighborhoods and is the 358th largest community in the state of California. Los Osos has gorgeous waterfront scenery and a multitude of waterfront activities available for residents and visitors alike. The community is warm and friendly and serves as the entrance to Montana de Oro State Park.

The first known inhabitants of the area were people of the Chumash tribes. The first European explorers to the area were the members of the Portola Expedition in 1769. During the Mission Era, the area was controlled by Spain, but control shifted to Mexico after they gained their independence from Spain. When California became a state control of the area shifted to the U.S. Notable Residents of the area have included stop motion animist and creator of Gumby, Art Cokely, pro football player, and defensive tackle Jerome Long and many more. Up until 2010, Los Osos and Baywood Park were counted as a single Census Designated Place, today they are counted as two separate areas. The community is part of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District and local schools include Monarch Grove Elementary, Baywood Elementary, Los Osos Middle School, and others.

Los Osos is home to the Elfin Forest, a nature preserve and unique plant community. Due to the harsh habitat and poor soil, many plants are stunted creating pygmy versions or native trees and plants. Other local attractions include Montana de Oro State Park, Sweet Springs Nature Preserve Point Buchon Trail, and others. The community hosts events throughout the year like a Christmas Parade, annual clam bake, Small Shops Osos, and still more events like kids' crafts and family movies are hosted by the local library. Homes for sale are primarily middle-class or higher in design and price. To begin your search for a place to call home in sunny Los Osos, call Robert Sousa at 805-460-3000 today.
