Morro Bay

The city hosts several civic events that help foster a sense of community and civic pride

Welcome to Morro Bay

Morro Bay, California is a semi-small waterfront city in San Luis Obispo county. The city spans 10.332 square miles approximately half of which is land area and half water area. The city has a mild Mediterranean climate, and a portion of the bay area has been designated as both a state and national bird sanctuary and estuary. The city hosts several civic events that help foster a sense of community and civic pride, one such event is Art in the Park which occurs several times a year like Memorial Day, the fourth of July, and Labor Day. Other events include the annual Vocal Jazz Festival, the Morro Bay Triathlon, and Annual Winter Fair. Tourist attractions predominantly lie along the shoreline and on nearby streets.

In ancient times the area, that would one day be Morro Bay, was home to a Chumash settlement. A group of Filipinos, the first to visit America, arrived at the Morro Bay area in 1587. The first Europeans in the area belonged to the Spanish Portola expedition in 1769. After Mexico gained independence from Spain, the Morro Bay area was under Mexican control and was split into cattle and dairy ranches. Morro Bay was founded in 1870 by Franklin Riley. The bay and community grew out of the need to export dairy and beef products. Riley was integral in the building of the wharf and the town that drew up around it. During WWII there was a Naval Base on the north side of Morro Rock where sailors trained to use Higgins boats, a shallow draft barge style boat. From the beginning of the 20th century, Morro Bay has remained a popular location for beach vacations.

The city is part of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District and local schools include Del Mar Elementary and Morro Bay High School. Morro Bay is a natural embankment with an artificial Harbor that was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Morro Rock is a striking landmark and a 576-foot-high Volcanic Plug that stands at the entrance of the harbor.
